Surface Protection and Maintenance

What Ceramic Coating Actually Does

Ceramic coating is a liquid-applied protective product that chemically bonds to a compatible prepared surface. Once cured, it creates a slick and hydrophobic layer that can improve gloss, make contamination easier to remove and simplify routine washing.

Protected Finish, Easier Care
01

Enhanced Gloss

A properly prepared and coated surface can appear deeper, clearer and more reflective. The result depends heavily on the paint condition before coating.

02

Hydrophobic Performance

Water forms tighter beads and moves more easily across the surface. This helps washing and drying, but does not prevent every water spot.

03

Easier Cleaning

Dirt, road film and bug residue may be easier to remove from a maintained coated surface. The vehicle still requires regular washing.

04

Environmental Resistance

Coating can add resistance to common contamination and exposure. Bird droppings, bugs and road film should still be removed promptly.

05

UV and Oxidation Support

A maintained coating can support the underlying surface against exposure. It does not make paint immune to oxidation or fading.

The coating performs best when the surface is properly prepared and the vehicle is maintained using appropriate products and wash methods.

Realistic Expectations

Ceramic Coating Is Not Paint Protection Film

Paint protection film and ceramic coating serve different purposes. PPF is a thicker physical film for rock chips and road debris; ceramic coating is a liquid-applied surface treatment focused on gloss, hydrophobic behavior and maintenance.

Ceramic Coating Helps With

  • Gloss enhancement and surface clarity
  • Hydrophobic behavior and easier drying
  • Easier routine cleaning
  • Resistance to common environmental contamination
  • Maintaining painted and filmed surfaces
  • Reducing how strongly some contamination bonds

Ceramic Coating Does Not

  • Prevent rock chips or impact damage
  • Repair scratches or remove swirl marks
  • Correct oxidation or paint defects
  • Prevent every water spot
  • Make paint scratch proof
  • Make a vehicle maintenance free
  • Replace PPF in high-impact areas

Preparation Determines the Result

Ceramic Coating Does Not Correct Paint

Ceramic coating adds protection and gloss to the surface that already exists. It does not automatically remove swirl marks, wash scratches, oxidation, water-spot etching, sanding marks, polishing defects or paint damage.

If defects remain before coating, they may remain visible beneath the coating.

Paint Condition Comes FirstInspection, decontamination and the agreed restoration level are completed before coating.

New Vehicle Inspection

New paint is not automatically defect free. Delivery, dealership washing and storage can leave scratches, water spots or contamination.

Decontamination

Washing, iron removal, tar removal, clay treatment and mineral treatment are selected according to condition.

One-Step Enhancement

A one-step polish may improve gloss and reduce lighter swirl marks or haze without removing every deeper defect.

Multi-Stage Correction

More severe defects may require additional stages planned around paint thickness, defect severity and safe removal limits.

Different Surfaces Require Different Products

Coating Paint, PPF and Matte Finishes

01

Painted Surfaces

Ceramic coating may enhance gloss, hydrophobic behavior and ease of maintenance on properly prepared paint. Paint condition is inspected before coating.

02

Gloss Paint Protection Film

A compatible coating may improve slickness, hydrophobic behavior and cleaning over gloss PPF. It does not extend the PPF warranty unless written terms say so.

03

Matte Paint & Stealth PPF

Matte and satin surfaces require a compatible product that preserves the low-gloss appearance. A gloss-enhancing coating is not assumed suitable.

The correct coating is selected according to the actual surface. One formulation is not assumed to perform identically on paint, gloss PPF, matte PPF, vinyl, glass and interior materials.

Multi-Surface Protection

Exterior Glass

A compatible glass coating can improve hydrophobic behavior and make rain, bugs and road contamination easier to remove.

Warranty terms and performance vary by product and surface. Not every coated surface receives the same coverage or durability.

The Toyz Process

Preparation First. Coating Second.

Surface preparation, paint condition, polishing, application technique and the curing environment all affect the finished result.

01

Vehicle Inspection

We assess paint, existing PPF, repainted panels, swirl marks, water spots, oxidation, previous products, wheels, glass and included interior surfaces.

02

Wash and Decontamination

The vehicle is thoroughly washed and decontaminated to remove bonded contamination according to its condition.

03

Paint Correction or Enhancement

When necessary, paint is polished to improve clarity and reduce correctable defects at the agreed level.

04

Final Surface Preparation

Polishing oils, residue and contamination are removed so the coating can bond to a properly prepared surface.

05

Coating Application

The selected product is applied to approved surfaces according to current manufacturer instructions.

06

Controlled Curing

The vehicle remains indoors during the initial cure. Timing depends on the selected product and current instructions.

07

Final Inspection

We inspect for high spots, uneven application, residue, surface clarity, coverage and overall finish.

08

How to Maintain a Ceramic-Coated Vehicle

Ceramic coating makes routine care easier, but it does not remove the need for proper maintenance.

Follow Initial Cure Instructions

Avoid water, washing or outdoor exposure for the product-specific period provided at delivery. There is no single cure time for every coating.

Wash Regularly

Regular washing prevents road film, minerals and contamination from remaining on the coating for extended periods.

Use Appropriate Products

Use pH-neutral, coating-safe and current XPEL-approved maintenance products where appropriate. Avoid unnecessary abrasives, harsh solvents and aggressive polishes.

Remove Contamination Promptly

Bird droppings, bugs, tree sap, hard water and sprinkler water should be removed as soon as reasonably possible.

Avoid Automatic Brush Washes

Aggressive brushes can create swirl marks on the underlying paint or PPF. Careful hand washing is preferred.

Maintain Hydrophobic Performance

Reduced beading may indicate surface contamination rather than coating failure. Maintenance washing or decontamination may restore behavior.

Ceramic Coating FAQ

A few helpful answers before you book.

Not sure which coating or preparation is right? Include your vehicle’s year, make, model, paint condition, and any existing PPF.

Explore all FAQs
Is ceramic coating scratch proof?

No. It may provide limited resistance to very light surface contact, but improper washing can still create swirl marks in paint or PPF.

Does ceramic coating prevent rock chips?

No. Ceramic coating is not a replacement for paint protection film. PPF is more appropriate for rock chips and road debris.

Will ceramic coating remove swirl marks?

No. Swirl marks must be corrected through polishing before coating. Coating protects the surface condition that exists when installed.

Does a new vehicle need paint correction?

Possibly. New vehicles may already have scratches, water spots, transportation damage or dealership wash marks and should be inspected.

Can ceramic coating be applied over PPF?

Yes, when the selected coating is compatible with the PPF. It may improve slickness, hydrophobic behavior and ease of maintenance.

Can coating be applied to matte or satin PPF?

Only with a compatible product designed for low-gloss surfaces so the original matte or satin appearance is preserved.

Does coating eliminate the need to wash?

No. The vehicle still requires regular washing. Coating can make maintenance easier, but contamination must still be removed.

Can ceramic coating prevent water spots?

No coating can guarantee that water spots will never occur. Mineral-rich water may still leave deposits when allowed to dry.

How long does ceramic coating last?

Durability varies with the product, preparation, installation, exposure, storage, washing, maintenance and environment. Current XPEL guidance applies to each product.

Can a coated vehicle use an automatic car wash?

Careful hand washing is preferred. Aggressive brush washes may create swirl marks on the underlying paint or PPF.
